Eighteenth century German poet Goethe visited the Vesuvian area and observed that "the region imposes on its inhabitants the same habits, tastes, amusements and style of living" despite the passage of centuries since the eruption in 79 AD. Goethe, no doubt, was gazing into the face of the Vesuvian genius.
